When ICP released its first album way back in 1991, the initials stood for Inner City Posse. Later on, this Detroit band changed its name to Insane Clown Posse. This duo consists of Joe Bruce, also known as Violent J, and Joey Ulster who goes by the more interesting name of Shaggy 2 Dope. The kind of music they perform is a sort of hardcore hip hop known as horrorcore. Their music consists of supernatural and horror themed lyrics and they have elaborate stage shows to go along with it. ICP has a devoted fan following that calls itself the Juggalos. Female fans are not to be left behind and they call themselves the Juggalettes.

The lyrics of almost every song released by ICP have managed to attract a lot of attention because of their unconcealed violence and malice. Some of their favorite themes are cannibalism and necrophilia, when they are not singing about ordinary murders. ICP justifies its violent lyrics saying that they give their urban audience an outlet for all their dissatisfaction as well as their pent up aggression. A closer examination of their lyrics will also show you that ICP talks about various problems that affect the youth of today such as racism, domestic violence and sex abuse, especially of children.

During various interviews, the members of ICP have taken pains to explain that they never incite their fans to commit violence. The violent lyrics and the suggestive stage acts are just used as a device to get the attention of the audience. Their core audience is very young and therefore has a notoriously short attention span. It follows therefore, that a band has to resort to outrageous lyrics and acts in order to gain and retain their attention.

ICP is very vocal in their rejection of violence and band members have gone on record at various times saying that they do not approve of violence of any sort.

ICP has been very successful in creating the Juggalo subculture and there are even some established rap artists who consider themselves part of this group. There is an annual event called the Gathering of the Juggalos organized by the band

In cities all across America, digital billboards are springing up, bringing the benefits of instantly changeable digital graphics, images and text, to a medium where advertising contracts were traditionally sold for months or longer at a time.

As of January 2007, about 400 digital billboards populated the U.S. landscape, according to an article in The New York Times. Quoting a forecast from the Outdoor Advertising Association of America, OAAA, the article reported that about 4,000 digital billboards will be in use in 10 years.

A recent example of the use of a digital billboard probably encapsulates the reason why they're so appealing better than a 10,000-word treatise on them ever could. Digital billboard operators in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque and Waterloo, Iowa, teamed up Jan. 3 to deliver news from the Iowa presidential caucuses that was updated every seven to 10 minutes till the process was complete and Senator Barak Obama and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee were declared the winners.

Having access to that sort of immediacy on such a scale in the outdoor advertising arena was unthinkable a few short years ago. What that translates to on a commercial basis is the same digital sign can be used to advertise hundreds and hundreds of products in the same day -not the same product for months on end.

To date, the dominant display technology responsible for these digital billboards is a particularly bright, particularly responsive light emitting diode -LED. Just as TVs -whether their LCD or plasma flat panels or old-fashioned cathode ray tube televisions- make pictures based on tiny discrete picture elements called pixels, light-emitting-diode-based billboards rely on an array of LEDs to display text, graphics and video. (Video is a major application in stadiums; it's more doubtful how useful or safe it would be if the intention was to communicate with drivers zipping down the interstate at 70 miles per hour.)

While highly effective, large LED signs are quite expensive and power-hungry. A Washington Post article last spring quoted an executive with CBS Outdoor, one of the three largest outdoor advertising companies in the world, as saying a 14-by-48-foot LED digital billboard costs about 0,000. With that sort of price tag, it's easy to understand why the OAAA forecasts their number to grow to only 4,000 in 10 years while there are about 450,000 billboards across America. It's also not too hard to imagine that full-on, high-quality video-, text- and graphic-based LED signage may be out of reach for literally hundreds of thousands of other outdoor signage applications.

However, there is an alternative. New high-gain projection screens, such as the XL-A-Vision screen from AccelerOptics in Carthage, Missouri, have the ability to reject enough ambient light -even the intense noonday sun- to make the use of video projectors a practical, affordable alternative. Depending on the type of configuration specified, this approach to outdoor digital signage can cost in the tens of thousands or dollars, not several hundred thousand dollars as with the LED-based approach.

Recently, the first major outdoor application of an XL-A-Vision screen went online in Grants Pass, Oregon, where the developer of a modern office complex installed a double-sided outdoor projection-based sign based on the high-gain screen. The 10.5-by-15-foot sign, which the building's owner has dubbed a€œThe Paragon,a€ offers all of the advantages one would expect of a digital sign, including the opportunity for ad sales to offset the cost of the display.

However, what really drives home the point of why this approach to outdoor digital signage is significant is the fact that the building's owner, Consolidated Financial, did not have the budget to pay for an LED-based digital sign. If projection-based signage made possible by a high-gain projection screen technology had not been available, the company would have abandoned the idea of installing an outdoor digital signage.

While the number of digital billboards using LED-technology will climb over the next 10 years, think of how many more applications for outdoor digital signage will be enabled by this revolutionary, affordable approach to projection screen technology. High-gain projection screens, like those used for The Paragon, may have as big of an impact on the outdoor advertising landscape -if not bigger- than LED-based approaches.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Where can I get a map of bike trails in Des Moines, Iowa?

    • ANSWER:
I googled bike trails in Des Moines Iowa and here's one site that might help you

  2. QUESTION:
Why do some older cities have alleys and some don't.?
Here is a comparison of Des Moines, IA, and St. Paul, MN. Each of these neighborhoods was built around the same time but look at how different they look. Why is this? One looks like there are a ton of empty lots. Here is St. Paul:

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=st+paul&sll=41.596301,-93.664681&sspn=0.00475,0.011362&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=St+Paul,+Ramsey,+Minnesota&ll=44.931129,-93.172013&spn=0.004497,0.011362&t=k&z=17

    And Des Moines:

    • ANSWER:
Alleys were mostly made so people could throw their waste, trash, whatever in them. Before alleys, everything was thrown into the street which soon became very unsanitary. Later back alleys became places where people could park their cars to get to garages and the trashmen to go down.

  3. QUESTION:
How much will I pay in tolls driving between Wichita, KS and Des Moines, IA?
I'm from Arizona, and I'm driving across the country through to Iowa. I see that Google maps shows that I am going to need to take the following TOLL ROADS:

I-35 N from Wichita to Emporia
I-335 N from Emporia to Topeka
    I-470 around Topeka
    I-70 into Missouri

My question is....how much would the toll be on each leg of the trip through Kansas? In other words, could somebody from Kansas break down the individual tolls on the 35, 335, 470, and 70? Thanks in advance!

    • ANSWER:
I was born, raised, and currently live in Des Moines. And I used to live in Kansas for graduate school.

The only toll road I ever encountered was the Kansas Turnpike. That was basically Wichita to Lawrence. If seems you are taking that route. But . . . .

First, why are you going up to Topeka? You can take I-35 directly into Des Moines. If this is just an extra stop, I get it. But I'm just asking. :)

I think the most you'll pay is . If they still do it this way, you get a ticket thing at the first terminal and you keep driving through the terminals until you exit the turnpike. And then you pay at the end/where you get off. It makes more sense than having to stop every so often and throw change like Illinois does.

But unless you are going to Topeka for a reason, I recommend taking the turnpike from Wichita to Emporia, getting off the turnpike and taking I-35 up to K.C. You can bypass Topeka all together, and the tolls, as far as I remember, stop at Emporia.

Good luck to you! I hope you have fun while you are in Des Moines! :)

  4. QUESTION:
FOR IOWANS WHO KNOW THEIR ROUTES!?
i live in des moines, iowa. and i want to get to jordon creek mall without using the freeway. is there any possible ways?? and if yes how, and if you know the answer do any of you have a map!! PLEASE HELP!!

    • ANSWER:
You don't say WHERE in Des Moines you are beginning your journey. Therefore no one can give you a routing that would avoid the roads you don't wish to travel and that would make sense.

Since you may not want to give out your address, go to mapquest.com, enter your starting address and destination address, follow the instructions about choice of route (fastest, shortest, etc.), and get a routing suggestion with accompanying maps for each leg of the trip.

  5. QUESTION:
Does your city have a system of "skywalks"?
Des Moines, Iowa has an extensive enclosed, environmentally controlled walk system that is 4 miles long, with a mall inside (see the link). I was wondering what other larger cities might have this.

    • ANSWER:
I'm pretty sure they have close to 9 miles of skywalks in minneapolis. Probably because it gets so cold there in the winters!

Shoulders

When the shoulders are square to the camera, they will appear artificially broadened, and give the portrait a very static look. It is usually best to position the subject so that the line of their shoulders is about 30° to the the subject/camera axis. The easiest way to do this is to sit the subject on a chair placed at an angle of 30°.
Use a chair without arms, because the subject will automatically use them, and this tends to make clothes ride up, affecting the shoulder and neck lines. The best shoulder line is produced when the hands are placed in the sitter's lap, or the far hand place on their knee (the idea here is that the near shoulder should always be higher than the far shoulder).
Depending on the subject, a good pose can be obtained if the subject sits facing away from the camera (i.e. back to camera with shoulders still at about 30° to the the subject/camera axis), and looks back over their shoulder.

Head

When the shoulders are at 30° to the the subject/camera axis (facing the camera), the head can rotate through an angle of about 100°. The head can also be tilted either side of the vertical axis. The exact degree of rotation and tilt will depend on the subject, and require some experimentation (and you may need to adjust your lighting) . If the head is turned too far, it can produce unsightly neck wrinkles.
Generally, very formal portraitures are produced when the axis of the facial features is vertical (i.e. it is not tilted to either side). This is often a good option for more mature subjects. Tilting the head to either side creates a diagonal axis to the features. This suggests movement an vitality, and is often best for younger subjects.
If the subject has a weak chin, get them to tilt their head back a little, which will make their chin stick out. If they have a strong jaw, have the subject tilt their head forward reduce its prominence.
Care needs to be taken with 3/4 portraits (i.e. the face is at an angle of about 45° to the subject/camera axis). The tip of the nose should not coincide with, nor cut through the profile of the cheek.

Eyes

The eyes are the most important element of a portrait. They should not be looking down, unless you wish to convey thoughtfulness or any other emotion (e.g. coyness, sadness, etc). Eyes looking directly at the camera is usually the best option. Take care when photographing eyes that are not looking at the camera. This creates a sight-line (a line that the viewer's eyes follow), which can lead the viewer's eyes out of the picture. The best option here is to include a little more background, so that the subject's gaze falls within the frame.

Smiles

Genuine smiles are hard to capture. Avoid big grins and grudging smiles. Some people smile easily, while other rarely smile at all. Go for a natural expression, be it serious or smiling, and remember, true feelings are expressed by the eyes!

Camera height

The optimum camera height for portraiture is at about the same level as the subjects eyes. Raising the camera height a little about eye level can cause the subject to open their eyes a little wider. Conversely, dropping the camera height a little below eye level can add height and dignity. Experiment.

Hands

Hands can be included in a head and shoulders shot, but are difficult to photograph because they can easily look like a bunch of bananas. They should not be nearer to the camera than the face, or they will be too prominent. Hands turned sideways with fingers extended look elegant. If including hands, try and give them somewhere to rest, or something to do (e.g. holding a prop).

Arms

If forearms are to be included in the shot, they should not form a vertical line. Ideally forearms and hands should point towards the face. However, watch for changes to the shoulder line, as raising a limb can also raise a shoulder (the near shoulder should always be higher than the far shoulder).

Multiple subjects

The single most important objective is to connect the subjects in some way (e.g. looking at each other, touching heads, etc), otherwise they might as well be photographed separately. Avoid heads in a row, and gaps between the subjects. Make one head higher than the other(s) to create a triangular composition. Two heads inclined towards each other also forms a triangle.

Footnote: There are circumstances when these "rules" may be broken, but the intention of this article is to convey simple guidelines applicable to most situations.

Tony Award-winning Broadway and West End musical Wicked is an excited adaptation of  the best-selling novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire and a parallel novel of L. Frank Baum's classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz. Wicked the musical is not Wicked the novel. While the novel is its source, the musical presents only pieces of it, in a much simplified form, and often diverging wildly from the novel's narrative. One might be tempted to think all this destroys the work; but in the end it improves it, shining a bright light on the story's numerous ironies and interlaced levels of social commentary.  But the score of Wicked musical is heavily thematic, bearing in some senses more resemblance to a film score than a traditional musical score.

The musical debuted on Broadway on October 30, 2003. It was produced by Universal Pictures and directed by Joe Mantello, with musical staging by Wayne Cilento. Choosing from the 38 speaking characters in Wicked the novel, the authors of Wicked the musical show decided to focus their show on eight key characters plus a few others and the ensemble. Current San Francisco Cast principals are:

  • Kendra Kassebaum as Glinda
  • Tim Talman as Witch's Father
  • Neka Zang as Witch's Mother
  • Fiama Fricano as The Midwife
  • Teal Wicks as Elphaba
  • Deedee Magno Hall as Nessarose
  • Eddy Rioseco as Boq
  • Patty Duke as Madame Morrible
  • Tom Flynn as Doctor Dillamond
  • Nicolas Dromard as Fiyero
  • Tim Talman as The Ozian Official
  • Lee Wilkof as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
  • Everth Lopez as Chistery

Wicked tells the story of Elphaba born with emerald-green skin, smart, fiery and misunderstood, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Their friendship struggles through their opposing dispositoins and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, their reactions to the Wizard's corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba's public fall from grace. Their buddy story is only one of several storylines and subplots in a carefully constructed, surprise-filled musical adventure. The music and lyrics are birilliantly selected and presented by Stephen Schwartz. Wicked is a truly heartfelt story of friendship and love. As Richard Zoglin of 'Time Magazine' put it, "If every musical had a brain, a heart and the courage of Wicked, Broadway really would be a magical place!"

Wicked topped the nominations counts for all Broadway shows with a total of ten nominations and was Tony-award winner in three of them: Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical - Idina Menzel; Best Scene Design - Eugene Lee. The musical garnered the most nominations and Drama Desk awards of any show this season. Wicked's final awards announced May 16, 2009 was:

  • Oustanding Musical - Wicked,
  • Outstanding Lyrics - Stephen Schwartz,
  • Outstanding Book - Winnie Holzman,
  • Oustanding Costume Design - Susan Hilferty,
  • Oustanding Set Design of a musical - Eugene Lee
  • Oustanding Director of a Musical - Joe Mantello

At the end of January 2009, Wicked began showing in San Francisco. A second Wicked tour of the United States and Canada started on March 7, 2009 at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in Fort Myers, FL. Now the tour continues trough Memphis, TN, Tempe, AZ, Tulsa, OK, San Diego, CA, Austin, TX, Seattle, WA, Nashville, TN, Des Moines, IA, Denver, CO, Wichita, KS, Kansas City, KS, Cleveland, OH, Schenectady, NY, Providence, RI. Others cities will expect Wicked in 2010: Philadelphia, PA, Syracuse, NY, Greenville, SC, Dayton, OH, Miami, FL, Richmond, VA, Durham, NC, Toledo, OH, St. Louis, MO.

There is currently one U.S. touring production. This popular a production makes tickets very hard-to-find, but Ticketloot.com is your source for premium tickets for those sold-out shows. Hard money literally thrives on good property deals presented by borrowers. Simply put, you need to find a good deal if you want access to hard money.

Let us recall that hard money loans are collateral-based. What the hard money lender will consider as collateral is the property you are about to buy, for instance a fixer upper. A lender will not approve your loan and accept the property as collateral if the house has no potential to yield profit. Hard money lenders assess the profitability of the fixer upper you are about to rehab and not your creditworthiness. That means that you, as a rehabber, must search only for the best fixer upper deals.

The amount of money that will be given to you will also depend on the ARV, or the after repair value of the property. This is the value of the property after it has been rehabbed. The bigger the ARV, the bigger the loan you will get. Hard money lenders usually grant borrowers 70% of the ARV and this amount is often enough to buy the property and answer repair costs.

In a way, securing hard money is a way of validating whether the fixer upper you found indeed will give you more returns. Lenders are willing to finance a deal for you if it will yield positive returns because that is how they will earn too.
