QUESTION:
Can I stay overnight at Des Moines Airport?-
ANSWER:
Check the web site to see if the airport closes at night. If they close and then reopen a few hours later then you can not stay overnight at the airport. There are a number of airports that actually close the doors and will tell people they have to leave. (I got caught in New York that way one evening)

QUESTION:
Flying alone for the first time(Des Moines to San Diego). Need a step-by-step for what to do at the airport.?
I've been to an airport with family before but I've never actually gone through baggage, security, etc. by myself. I just want to be as smooth as possible when I get there. Also, if there are any specific insights to navigating either the DSM or SDG airports I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!-
ANSWER:
First off, San Diego = SAN, not SDG.In a nutshell:
1. Park in long-term parking if you're the one flying. Short-term is mostly for people wanting to go inside and pick someone up. Or have someone drop you off at the airport.
2. Go inside (the doors will likely be marked with the names of airlines...go in the door for your airline).
3. Go up to the ticket counter for your airline, and wait for either a person or a machine. Either way, follow their instructions to check your luggage and get your boarding pass. You could also check in online earlier that day or the night before - but if you're checking luggage you'd still have to wait in a line by the ticket counter.
4. Now that you have your boarding card, go to the security checkpoint and wait in line. If the airport has multiple concourses, make sure you get in the line for your concourse. For instance, if your boarding card says gate C15, follow the signs for concourse C and get in that security line. I've not been to DSM, and haven't been to SAN in years, so don't know if they have multiple lines or not. Near the entrance to the line, you'll need to show your boarding card and driver's license to an agent. People who are not flying can't go past this point.
5. When you get near the front of the security line, put your carryon bag on the conveyor belt, and put your shoes and anything metal into one of the plastic tubs, and put the tub on the belt. Get your laptop out of the bag, and put it in a tub. Also take off your jacket and put it in a tub.
6. When the agent says they're ready, walk through the metal detector. That should be it, but if it's not your lucky day, you may have to have them run their little wand over your body. If your boarding card says "SSSS", you definitely will.
7. After the agent says you're done, get your things off of the other end of the conveyor belt. Make sure you get everything.
8. Walk to your gate. Look at the departure TV monitor, to make sure your gate didn't get changed while you were in security. If you go get something to eat or use the restroom, check this TV again when you return.
9. The flight will start boarding about 20 minutes before departure time. Wait until they call your row, then go to the door, hand your boarding card to the gate agent. They will either scan it or tear off part of it. Then they'll hand it back to you. Walk through the door, down the jetway, and get on the plane. If you're tall, watch your head. Now go and find your seat and sit down.Upon arrival in San Diego, follow the crowd and the signs to the baggage claim area. The baggage carousels will have electric signs on them, and one of them will show your flight number. Eventually your bag will appear. Now you grab your bag, and go rent a car or hail a taxi or whatever.
